Getting Started with Inscription

Upon training you have these three patterns: Ivory Ink, Silver Ink, and Scroll of Stamina. You require Scribe Tools which are vendor sold for 1 silver. There are scribe satchels that hold inscription materials, and if you skim the list of materials (inks and pigments), you will understand how this can be helpful above and beyond the herb bags you might have on your herbalist or alchemist thus far. Hopefully you will find this information useful.

Glyphs

There are two types of glyphs, major and minor, and both are found on a tab in your spellbook. They function as permanent enhancements for various spells and abilities and are divided by class. There are a variety of required levels for the glyphs, but those seem to be mostly what is the minimum level you can train the spell they alter. Major glyphs are the only ones implemented thus far and even several of those have the To Be Implemented (TBI) tag. Also missing are any Death Knight or Warrior glyphs. The glyphs are not all available at level 1. It seems they are unlocked at various levels, possibly 20, 40 and 60, though only the last required level to unlock is confirmed. Supposedly inscribers are to receive an additional glyph slot, but that also has not been implemented yet.

Recipes also often require parchments, which serve a similar function to threads in tailoring. They stack to twenty and were available on the inscription trainer for the following costs.

Milling

Milling herbs functions much as prospecting does for jewelcrafting. Herbs are milled five at a time, much like prospecting. But instead of prospecting one type of ore producing many types of gems, milling any of a "family" of herbs will result in the same one or two pigments. This is extremely helpful because you don't have to collect simply one thing, but in my limited testing the relative abundance of the two pigments that are found in one family of herbs do vary. Note that milling herbs yields no skillups.

Stacking and Patterns

Major glyphs stack to 5. Inks and pigments stack to 20. The low scrolls are such as the ones you can pick up currently in the game and stack to 5. But scrolls of recall which function as a hearthstone stack to twenty. All recipes require the use of the scribe tools. This is what was available to train at various skill levels. This is not a complete list however, because in the current beta build you cannot train past 300 in inscription. There were higher recipes on the trainer but this should give you a feel. I believe that the repetition of 1 Moonglow Ink, 1 Mageroyal, 1 Light, Common, Heavy, Resilient Parchments as reagents for even high level Glyphs (effectively utilizing only Peacebloom and Mageroyal to get 250+ skill) will be changed to match the Druid Glyph reagents which scale with level, so I am trying to take that into account with this guide.
